FRRR Community Immersion Tour: Innovation, Transition and Collaboration in Central Gippsland
Food & Fibre Gippsland recently hosted the FRRR Community Immersion Tour across Central Gippsland, bringing together stakeholders to explore examples of innovation, industry transition and diversification across the region.
An evening of connection and conversation
Prior to the tour, Food & Fibre Gippsland CEO, Simon Johnson, Brodie Anderson (Project Manager, Resilience & Innovation) and Amanda Gould (VegNET Gippsland Regional Development Officer) attended a dinner on 24 February at Maffco Brewery and Taphouse hosted by Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR). The evening provided a valuable networking opportunity, connecting regional leaders and partners involved in drought resilience initiatives. The team were delighted to meet with FRRR CEO, Natalie Egleton along with members of the Future Drought Fund team and other key stakeholders working across rural and regional Australia.
On-Farm Innovation at Hillside Dairies
The following morning began with a visit to Hillside Dairies in Tinamba West, owned and operated by Alister and Katie Clyne. Delegates gained insight into one of Australia’s largest robotic milking installations, featuring 16 DeLaval VMS V300 robots. The visit highlighted how Gippsland dairy producers are embracing advanced technology to improve efficiency, support animal welfare and reduce labour pressures while maintaining a pasture-based production system.
Understanding Industry Transition Across the Region
The group then travelled through the Maffra and Newry region, observing both active and former horticulture processing sites that reflect the evolving nature of Gippsland’s food production sector. Stops included the former Mulgowie Farming Company packing facility and the previous Saputo Dairy Australia processing plant. Delegates also viewed the former Dicky Bill farming operation, which has recently transitioned to management under Hussey & Co, demonstrating continued investment and production within the region’s horticulture industry.
Agritourism in Action at The Berry Dairy
The tour concluded with bellies full of chocolate strawberries, ice cream and delicious coffee at The Berry Dairy, a popular agritourism destination that combines strawberry production, a farm café and family-friendly experiences on a working dairy property. The visit showcased how farms can diversify their operations while strengthening connections between agriculture and the local community.
A Day Showcasing the Strength of Gippsland Agriculture
Overall, the tour highlighted the strength and adaptability of Gippsland agriculture, from cutting-edge dairy technology to horticultural production and agritourism innovation. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all participants and a positive opportunity for collaboration, learning and connection across the region’s agricultural community.
We also wanted to extend our warm thanks to FRRR for your message of thanks and letting us know how much you enjoyed the day. Great work from Amanda Gould!
