‘Winter Warmers’ seminar series: case study now published

Article written by Emily Scott, VegNET Regional Development Officer

The Winter Warmers Seminar Series (the Series) was funded and facilitated by VegNET Gippsland and focused on delivering horticulture specific seminars to support professional development and provide techniques to help businesses improve from within. At a time when vegetable and salad farms are struggling through a quiet winter with low prices and a flooded market, the Series focused on empowering participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools to make improvements to their daily operations and farm processes at no, or very little, cost.

The Series included three separate sessions:

  1. Cultural diversity and managing a culturally diverse team - presented by Nino Cipriani from AMES Australia.

  2. Lean principles in agriculture - presented by Toby Cook from Lean 6 Sigma Solutions.

  3. Leveraging your people - presented by Hugh Reardon from BQ Bridge.

Across the Series, a total of 14 separate businesses were represented, with feedback showing that participants took away significant levels of new knowledge and skills. One hundred percent of participants at session 3 stated that they would likely change farm practices or advice due to learnings from the Series. While there are ongoing challenges to overcome, the Series paved the way for a more knowledgeable and skilled workforce and helped to foster a culture of working on your business, not just in your business.
