Meet the Finalists - Mulgowie Farming Company

   Wednesday 18th November, 2020

Mulgowie Farming Company takes a proactive approach to sustainability and is recognised domestically and internationally as best practice farmers in today’s agricultural world.
The Australian owned, family business has developed an important national supply chain for its fresh produce categories, which include corn, beans, broccoli, pumpkin, along with a range of other assorted fresh vegetables.

This success is a direct result of generations of hard work by countless people who maintain a focus on delivering quality, fresh produce in the most efficient and sustainable manner possible.

With operations outside of Gippsland, Mulgowie Farming Company uses a farm in Queensland to continue to develop best practices for the future.

This is a 10-year vision to incorporate the latest technologies towards a fully automated farm incorporating robotics.

In the short to mid-term, they are very focused on improving efficiencies and sustainability.
Specific changes in their Gippsland operation have included reducing the number of passes in planting, improved soil carbon levels and water holding capacity.

They have expanded cover cropping which keeps live roots in the soil longer.

They have a developing Integrated pest management system, are investigating meadow bank strips using native plants and have a good understanding of water use on the property.

All of these practices and plans impressed the judges of the 2020 Excellence in Agribusiness Awards, and secured Mulgowie a place in the Excellence in Sustainability Award, sponsored by Bass Coast Shire Council.
